Call for action on illegal construction after building collapse
31 March 2008
An investigation into illegal construction practices is underway in India after a four-storey building collapsed, killing eight people, according to reports.
The Hindustan Times says the building collapsed on March 30th in the New Usmanpur locality of Seelampur, north-east Delhi.
Eight bodies have now been recovered from the site, which the Times of India reports was originally a two-storey building.
Around six months ago, however, construction started to add a further two storeys to the 40-year-old structure. The newspaper says the work was carried out without proper clearance.
It is believed the building collapsed when three lintels gave way and the majority of the victims are construction workers from Bihar.
Delhi's mayor, Arti Mehra, has now sent a letter to all deputy commissioners in the region calling on them to investigate and tackle illegal construction in their area.
According to reports, the building's owner is believed to be on the run and is wanted for questioning by police.
