Construction workers riot in UAE

Construction workers riot in UAE
A three-hour riot by construction workers at a real estate development in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) resulted in the detention of over 600 individuals, according to reports.

International Construction magazine states that the workers, who belong to Tiger Contracting, blocked roads with building materials and hurled stones and bricks from the upper floor of the development in Sharjah, the third-largest emirate in the UAE.

The site says police from three different forces were needed to contain the rioting and it quotes figures from Gulf News, which reports that four police officers and three contractors were hospitalised.

It adds that Bridgadier Humaid Humaid Mohammed Al-Hudaidi of the Sharjah Police told the newspaper that the disturbance was not linked to labour issues. The workers, who are believed to be from India, Afghanistan and Pakistan, would now face UAE courts, he added.

The violence is the latest incident to hit real estate sites in the UAE, the site says, much of which has been linked to a "crash" in workers' salaries due to the weakness of the US dollar.

Last month saw 1,500 construction workers riot in Sharjah over pay and conditions, the site states.
